The medical aspirants after Class 12 who wish to get MBBS admission must start preparing for three most competitive entrance examination. For admission to MBBS courses in India, it is mandatory to appear for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), All India Institute of Medical Sciences for MBBS (AIIMS MBBS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER MBBS) entrance exams.

As per the directives of the Supreme Court of India, NEET is the only entrance examination to conducted for MBBS admission in India. Admission to all government, private, central and deemed universities will be done on the basis of NEET scores. However, AIIMS, New Delhi and JIPMER, Puducherry conducts their own entrance examination for MBBS admission. The MBBS seats to all the colleges/institutes/universities are granted through counselling on the basis of merit rank, preferences of courses as well as colleges and availability of seats.

There are about 66,620 MBBS seats which are available across more than 470 medical colleges in India. Besides this, AIIMS offers around 807 seats in its 8 campuses including its main campus in the national capital, New Delhi. JIPMER also offers 200 MBBS seats through its own entrance test for the JIPMER Puducherry and Karaikal campuses.

However, it is the NEET exam which is taken by almost every MBBS aspirant for MBBS admissions in India. In the year 2018, more than 13 lakh candidates registered for NEET. The counselling for NEET is conducted for three rounds including mop-up round. Through NEET, 15% of the total seats in government colleges (except Jammu and Kashmir) are reserved for All India Quota seats, which is filled by Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). While the MBBS admission to 85% state quota seats are granted by respective state counselling authorities. Admissions for Deemed University MBBS programmes is done at an all India level by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on behalf of the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
